Hylocereus undatus "Night Blooming Cereus" Thong
SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION!!!
Named after one of Renko's favorite invasive materials, the NIGHT BLOOMING CEREUS, aka Hylocereus undatus-- a rampant crawling epiphytic cactus that favors both California and Hawaii landscapes, among may other places worldwide.
This specific night bloomer is the variety that makes dragonfruit, smells a bit rancid like bitter chocolate and fish sauce (unlike its other varieties that small heavenly) and only blooms in the Summer months.
On Oahu, the Hylocereus undatus was brought over as a cutting from Mexico in 1836 from a traveler who had passed through as a gift to Sybil Bingham (a missionary involved with many land developments due to her close friendship with reigning queen regent, Ka‘ahumanu).
Mrs. Bingham planted it along the volcanic rock wall that was built previously in 1831 for keeping cattle from wandering about, and it TOOK OFF (not surprising for an epiphytic invasive). Now almost 200 years later the rock wall still stands and acts as the iconic Punahou School wall which contains the school within it.
The Hylocereus undatus have since taken over the wall and from June to October on full moon nights a million giant white blooms light up the entirety of the wall under the moonlight. It is a breathtaking event and many people stop and park to walk alongside the wall.
One of Renko's proudest accomplishments was studying this flower for months in order to understand its ways, to create a time-lapsed installation piece of all cut buds ready to open. With photographer Linny Morris, they filmed the arrangement though the night to get a video of 200 arranged blooms opening and closing over the course of an entire night, from duck till dawn. The project was tasked to her and showcased by T Magazine for the New York Times. You can see this time lapse on NYT's website or Renko Floral's Instagram.
